Method for finding a yacht at the last minute
1. Subscribe to broker alerts
Cannes brokers (5-8 reputable players) receive cancellations and freed yachts in real time. Free email registration, automatic alert in case of a match. Reactivity required (24-48h to seize the opportunity).
2. Specialised yacht charter platforms
- Boatbookings.com - meta search engine, precise Cannes filters
- YachtFolio.com - Mediterranean inventory, last-minute alerts
- SamBoat.fr - 8-25m segment, real-time availability
- ClickAndBoat.fr - family leisure segment, affordable prices
- Borrow A Boat - international, very responsive
3. Local concierge with partner fleet
An experienced Cannes concierge knows 30-50 captains/owners personally. For a last-minute request, it can activate its network within 1-2h. Fee: 8-15% commission on the yacht rate.
4. Negotiating yacht price on top of an open slot
Yacht free < 7 days = frequent discounting: -15 to -35% off the standard rate, especially in May (post-Festival), June (post-Lions), September (post-Yachting Festival). The owner prefers to rent at half price rather than see the yacht empty.
Why a yacht may be unavailable
- Charter in progress - the yacht is rented during the requested period
- Geographic positioning - the yacht is offshore (Caribbean in winter, Mediterranean in summer typically)
- Maintenance / winterisation - annual works (often Oct-February)
- Reserved by owner - the owner is using it themselves
- Blocked MIPIM/Festival/Lions - multi-event client booking
- Sale in progress - the yacht is no longer rented during sale negotiation
Strategies to maximise availability
- Shift dates by 1-2 weeks to avoid event peaks
- Be flexible on size (25m yacht if 30m unavailable)
- Consider Antibes, Saint-Tropez or Monaco as nearby alternatives
- Prefer early booking (12 months) for Festival / MIPIM / Lions
- Sign up to broker / platform alerts for notifications
- Consider shared cabin charter (1 cabin on a 35m+ yacht) at the last minute
